Herbert studied singing in Milan and Munich and made his debut in 1927 at Darmstadt. His first recordings were made under the name “Ernesto Groh”. His impressive tenor voice drew comparisons with Richard Tauber with whom he shared a teacher (Carl Beines), but Groh was to make his career in film and radio where he was tremendously successful. He was one of the most popular radio voices of the 30’s and 40’s and his good looks and acting ability were to ensure his popularity in a number of films. His voice was also ‘loaned’ (dubbed), to other less gifted film actors. He had a pleasing, honeyed timbre and an easy flowing line. He died in 1982 at Norderstedt.
