Re: Pre-50's versus post-50's singing

So you're saying current modern techniques sound clear to us, but actually there is a lot of distortion and enhancement? Or if you allow, an example from a field that is only distantly related to classical music: Andrea Bocelli; but as a matter of fact, I heard him at the Vienna State Opera, where ...

Re: My favorite version of "The flower song" from Carmen.

Ah yes, another beautiful version: Richard Crooks, [url] I think Gedda is a fine Don José. He might not been the best for the more dramatic third act, but in the Flower Song he is in my ears perfect. Yes, I think Gedda is suberb - and his French is far better than most of the singers so far mention...

Re: Most beautiful obscure voice?

Teresa Stich-Randall (for how many people will she be obscure?) Ah yes - for me the ideal lyric soprano voice. First heard her on a recording of Haydn's "Creation" - she certainly outclassed the soprano singing "Eve" - but then Eve was only a supposedly perfect woman, whereas Stich-Randall was sing...

Franco Corelli

I've heard some lily-livered singers and critics pooh-poo this tenor superstar of the 60s, as if he were devoid of brain and style. The best I heard said of him by such critics was "he had a ginormous voice". Well, he certainly had, but he often used it with beautiful control and stylish restraint (...

Re: Most beautiful obscure voice?

It's an unfair world. Artists whose career coincided with some internationally well received singers with recording Another name that sprung to mind is the Russian lyrical tenor Sergei Lemeshev https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJfmqkWeTOw his beautiful voice and technique is every bit as good as his...

Re: Nicolai Gedda

"The brainiest tenor who ever sang a top C and hung onto it" (source unknown :). I adored his singing in the 60s and the 70s - and found him convincing in all of the numerous styles and types of composition he sang in - let alone in the five or six languages which he didn't just sing, but apparently...

Re: Luciano Pavarotti

I've been listening to some recordings from his earlier career - as Idamante in Idomeneo and Tebaldo in I Capuletti ed I Montecchi etc, and there is certainly a sweetness and elegance in his voice there which was to some extent lost as his voice got bigger later in his career. I'm not complaining to...

Re: Friedrich 'Fritz' Karl Otto Wunderlich 1930 - 1966

Wunderlich was the singing hero of my youth (with Nicolai Gedda coming pretty close). I had scarcely been aware of his glorious singing for two months when I heard of his tragic death, which shocked and saddened me. Over the years, I sought out as many of his recordings as I could, and though his ra...
