He was a great singer, but not my cup of tea. I agree with the OP about those straight tones. They sound awful.

There's a decline in great singers, that's what I can see. I would love someone to explain some fundamental differences though between both periods, why doesn't a Ponselle or a Pertile come from nowhere today?? I prefer my singers beefier, but I have to admit I love this sort of performance from talented opera singers. I wish they did more of that.

@Jim: better have a well projected voice than a "warm" woofy one...
