Re: What's your most treasured recording?

Since it got me interested in opera, I would have to say Di Stefano's 1959 London recording of arias. I also would place the original 45 rpm issue of Ferruccio Tagliavini's Neopolitan songs waaaay up there, also.

Re: Least musically boring opera overall?

How about Verdi's "Attila" & Boito's "Mefistofele" ?

Re: Dearth of capable singers

Opera, at least in the United States, is a fringe form...if it's not pop culture stuff here, it doesn't exist. One need only look at some of the last retrospectives for the year of those who have passed on. You might find a third-string quarterback, or a marginal heavy metal sort who killed himself,...

Re: What singers do you consider an acquired taste?

I think Giovanni Martinelli is an acquired taste, with his reedy delivery, as well as Giuseppe Morino, who has such a bleat to his voice, he makes Allessandro Bonci sound like he has a straight tone.

Re: Is the Met a suitable venue

I THINK IT HAS TO DO WITH THE VOICES...SOME CARRY WELL IN A LARGE HOUSE, SOME DON'T. YEARS AGO, WE HAD LARGE VOICES, BUT STILL THE STYLE. NOW WE HAVE SMALLER VOICES AND A LOSS OF STYLE.

An observation

Have you noticed in recent movies & T.V. shows that when something operatic is heard, it's being played by a character who's a serial killer, or gay...or a gay serial killer? Sort of gives opera lovers a bad vibe, huh? ;)

Re: Non-Operatic voices

Fine voices from those who didn't spend all their time in opera seem appropriate. Superb artists like Marian Anderson or Sergio Franchi would certainly fall into that niche.

Re: Franco Corelli

I think you have to give a lot of credit to Corelli. He had this enormous trumpet voice, as did Del Monaco, but was always trying to refine it, hence, his going into roles like Werther & Romeo...things a dramatic tenor wouldn't normally entertain doing. His nice diminuendo's & attempts at soft singi...

Re: Giuseppe Giacomini

Some people say Giacomini was inconsistent, but I have quite a few of his live performances, and they are all outstanding. I have always liked the "leather-lunged" tenors, such as Tito Del Bianco, Jonas Kaufmann, Giacomini, etc. If a singer is musical, but has a rather baritonal quality, it just mak...
