I know I'm tenor fixated but for many years I have admired the American tenor Richard Crooks, a singer of great integrity who to my mind retired too early from the operatic stage in the 1940's. Anyway, here he is from the 1930's:

Not opera I admit, but something from Spanish Zarzuela. How about Luis Damaso ? I like his vocal timbre and in searching youtube there is some opera as well:
