Re: Friedrich 'Fritz' Karl Otto Wunderlich 1930 - 1966

I fully agree with you Geoff about Winderlich and Bjorling. I am a little less enthusiastic about Caruso. He owed his prominence to his luck in starting at the same time as recording and having a voice which recorded well on the equipment together with the American love affair with large voices. I d...

Re: Any fans of Joyce DiDonato here?

I certainly enjoy Joyce DiDonato. Saw her recently here as part of her 'War and Peace' tour and it was one of the most theatrical experiences that I have seen, in years. I also consider her one of the most intelligent singers on stage.

Re: Is the Met a suitable venue

Your conducting comment Orestes is, I think, significant. However in the larger houses these type of works often seem to sound ponderous so that the singers can at least get through it. The weight of the voice should not, in theory, make any difference to the flexibility of the singing. This was tru...

Interesting photo Vlamgat. Aside from the handshake there is no contact between them (no eye contact).

Re: Mezza Voce

The technique is the same in both cases as far as I can hear. However Smirnov integrates it more completely into the performance while Vanzo uses it as a technique for the highest register. I enjoy both.

Re: Juan Diego Flórez

His tone does not have the 'warm' timbre which has come to be expected over the last one hundred years or so. Nevertheless he has resurrected the category of male singer with the light flexible tone. Because it is not a big sound it needs to be very well projected. He achieves this in spades and thi...

Re: Perhaps not perfect, but funny

Very enjoyable. In this context I am not sure how I would define perfection. I would like to see a lot more of this by competent singers and arrangers. I do not really enjoy pop versions of operatic arias. They cannot be sung without dumbing them down. This one is not dumbed down and I like the firs...

Re: Solomon Kromckenko

Thank you very much Vlamgat for your very informative summary. Some years ago I was collecting some Soviet singers recordings and compiling them for my own use and the most difficult part of this was getting any biographical details. I don't know how easy this would be now without speaking Russian b...
