Re: Juan Diego Flórez

Yes, this was a fine rendition. He has a certain charisma, it seems like he was born for the stage. I also have problem with him on the opera stage. He's excellent in the Zurich production of Don Pasquale. But his tenorino voice has not much weight in it. I think he would be better off singing Bach ...

Re: What operas do you need to see a better version of?

I have very rarely been satisfied with the execution of Verdi operas. Otello is not often performed well, and the problem is in my opinion, that there does not exist any Verdi style. The ideal Otello is Jon Vickers according to many, and his apostles like Kaufmann are bringing very boring interpreta...

Re: Top 3 over-exposed arias

The "Libiamo" is dreadful to hear separated from the opera, in concert form, where five or six singers shares the lines but there are worse, in my opinion. 1 Song to the moon from Dvorak's Rusalka . Every 25 year old soprano who labels themselves as future dramatic sopranos are singing thi...

Re: Top Trovatore Cast today

I think it is a better chance to hear a good Trovatore in a smaller, provincial house rather than in a large house like Munich or London, where they cast such singers as Jonas Kaufmann as Manrico. But Bryan Hymel is probably good, so is Anna Netrebko - if she would rework the role with a coach; Ludo...

Re: Nicolai Gedda

The most recorded tenor according to some sources. His early recordings are a most delight to listen to. In particular, Der Barbier von Bagdad with Schwarzkopf is a given favorite in my record collection as is many of his Mozart and operetta recordings. His voice seems to have gotten a more weary so...

Re: My favorite version of "The flower song" from Carmen.

Ah yes, another beautiful version: Richard Crooks, http://www.dismarc.org/index.php?form=display&oaiid=GHT%3A001%2FP12175A23411&db=0 True. Crooks is a very stylistic singer, however, I sometimes find his use of falsetto annoying. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJQmbaAv9p4 I think Gedda is ...

Re: Top 5 tenors today

Very hard to answer. There's tenors and there's tenors. I will restrain from mentioning tenors based on their appearence and acting skills and only concentrate on their voice. In that case: let's say, Bryan Hymel, Johan Botha, Piotr Beczala (heard him in 2008 ! - don't know if he is any good any lo...

Re: What's the best voice you've heard live?

Not easy - but Bryn Terfel - before he tried Hans Sachs and Wotan was pretty solid.

Re: Riccardo Stracciari

Stracciari had one of the most beautiful baritone-timbres for me. And he had a great and firm line and espevially this easy, ringing, almost tenor-like top, sailing up like an eagle who spreads his wings. ALways a bit nasal and thet siginficant snarl. I think he almost only sang in Italy/Europe? Di...
