Re: The sexiest historic singers..

A pleasantly interesting topic. After all, opera is a visual experience eh? Now as I'm male I'm going to make my obvious choice with the ladies. ( I say obvious, having spent a lifetime in the belief that there are two genders - male and female - but recently I'm informed by the media that there qui...

Re: Opinions about Jonas Kaufmann? Now sings Otello

I have no idea what the previous post was about the internet is forever the internet or some such twaddle. Getting back to Kaufmann, I have never understood the ravings about him. He is totally manufactured. As Jim says, I also like my tenors to sound like tenors and Kaufmann ain't it! However, he's...

Re: Who are your favorite opera singers?

(a) Jussi Bjorling (b) Jussi Bjoerling ( to appease U.S. spelling ). Seriously, so far as tenors are concerned, Bjorling had his own pedestal and then there was the unforgettable Fritz Wunderlich but, there are so many to pick from. There are many who are just about forgotten, for instance, Rubin Do...

Re: Is the Met a suitable venue

I think that your are right. What annoys me is that for whatever reason, opera directors/producers insist on pushing outrageous productions where the music remains the same ( one thing which cannot be meddled with) while lighting, sets and staging - if any - go from the sublime to the ridiculous. No...

Re: Is the Met a suitable venue

Extraordinary ! So it's OK for a concert pianist to use microphones or a solo violinist to use microphones, but not opera singers ? After years of hard work and study, that most fragile of instruments, the human voice, has to receive no help whatever in what is a relatively short career ? The questi...

Re: Giorgio Zancanaro

A very fine Baritone indeed, with an excellent career to his credit. A police motorcyclist, if I've got it right and it wasn't unknown for him to ride his bike at high speeds to make it to the theatre on time. He was and still is a favourite of mine, from the very beginning of his career. Regards, G...

Re: Should we keep performing the same old operas so often?

"Should we keep performing the same old operas so often" ?? Sure ! Why not ? Over the past 50 - 75 years, apart from Benjamin Britten I can't think of one 'modern' opera composer who has piqued (a good word, eh?) my interest. Come to that I can't think of a 'modern' opera performance which...

Christmas 2016

Ladies and Gents, Christmas is fast approaching and I've been browsing through the usual Christmas (music) Fare. A favourite for me is Adam's 'O Holy Night' and I suspect it is a favourite for many more. There are so many versions of this popular piece that we are spoiled for choice. Peter Lindroos ...

Re: Top 3 over-exposed arias

Hm, yes, I suppose they are over-exposed but for me, it's not the arias themselves so much as the vastly overrated incompetents who insist on singing them on various talent (if that's the right word) shows etc., to rapturous applause. It can be a bit irritating even when top class voices include the...
