I wouldn´t say past his prime, but in the wrong repertory vocally, though the role definitely fit his temperament.
The voice is not much different than 2-3 years earlier, it´s just that the roles got heavier as he went from Riccardo to Alvaro and from Duca to Canio and his high register became more tight and strained.
