Giuseppe Anselmi

Anselmi was not a flawless singer: scratchy lower notes (and not only lower ones), intonation issues, often not sufficiently supported top notes, some unevennesses - to be heard even in his most famous recordings. Still, there´s a lot to cherish in his recordings. Style, grace and charm. Lots of it in his justly famous aria from "Luisa Miller". This is a deeply sad version, full of nostalgia and refrained heartbreak - especially the beautifully nuanced second verse. A man deeply in love, whose heart has been broken. Or his aria from "Così fan tutte" - not the kind of more exact Mozart singing we are used to nowadays, but an intensely alive version, very personal and still authentic in its own right. And last but not least his delightful recordings of Neapolitan songs. The delicious and charming "Ammore è femmena", for example. Sad and disillusioning at the same time and yet with a wink.
njoy.
