The first young and upcoming artist we'd like to feature this year, is tenor Andrew Owens. Andrew is a rising star who is impressing audiences with his lyric tenor voice of great extension and agility. Here he sings the challenging "Ed ancor la tremenda porta... Come uno spirto angelico" from Donizetti's Roberto Devereux. With great skill he traverses this tricky tessitura to climax on a ringing C#. Without a doubt, we'll be hearing more about Andrew Owens.

Re: Tenor Andrew Owens
Very nice, he is well along in his training...
his voice shines above the staff.
Some nits to pick but nothing major...

Salvatore Fisichella masterclass with Andrew Owens
Re: Tenor Andrew Owens
Here is a tenor of extreme value. To say 'of promise' is a misnomer. He's the real thing. Put him on stage in a major production in a major opera house and he would set the house alight. However, the world does not always work on merit. We all know that in so many cases it's not what you know but who you know. Established singers guard their territory jealously, we all know that. Talent alone is not always enough. I hope that this young singer rises above opera politics and makes his mark. He deserves no less.

Is this guy from your home town or something, Geiff?
Re: Tenor Andrew Owens
No, not at all. I had never heard of him. I just happen to think that he's the real deal and he deserves to succeed. If you don't agree, then I would be interested to read your views. Maybe you know something I don't. (That would not be difficult, believe me, no one is perfect).

Re: Tenor Andrew Owens
No, I just think he needs more polish. Not sure how well his voice would go over in a big house. The squillo is there above the staff to carry but he might not have enough oscuro in his voice...
Re: Tenor Andrew Owens
You could be right.............. let's hope he makes it.

Re: Tenor Andrew Owens
Please pardon me, I should have continued this in my previous post..........in listening to the Fisichella masterclass, what a joy it was to hear Salvatore putting in his glorious two penn'orth. One of the best tenors of the past 40 - 45 years.

Re: Tenor Andrew Owens
I hadn't listened to the Fisichella recording before but in it he corrected some of the minor things that were going wrong in the other recordings...the 'spazio' comment was right on and something I had noticed occasionally in the other recordings. Fischella did a nice job of bringing out the young mans' voice though his lower range is still rather weak and I guess there isn't too much to be done about that...just the nature of Owens voice. The High C to Bb of Speranza that Fisichella had him repeat several times got much better...the oscuro in his voice was there for that and while his voice will never be much darker, it was a more pleasing sound.
