Died yesterday at the are of 88. By my understanding he was a genuine counter tenor or haute contre or male alto as opposed to a falsettist. He sang in full voice. There has been a lot of controversy about his voice and it is certainly an acquired taste. We do not know, these days, what to do with these type of voices and I suspect, he may have had difficulty in getting sufficient work. In any event he retired from performance at the early age of 36.
